Since 1994 Julie Lichtenberg has been producing & directing original plays in collaboration with men women and youth who are, or have been incarcerated.
Lichtenberg is the artistic and managing director of the Performance Project. The Performance Project is a non-profit based in western Massachusetts, that combines artistic self-expression, a public voice, and a grassroots network of support for men, women and youth who have been in jail. The Performance Project creates theater about oppression and liberation. Their plays are created and performed by men, women, and youth who are currently or formerly incarcerated and other artists in the community.
Through multi-generational collaborations they examine the effects of racism, economic oppression, bigotry, and violence, and create compelling works of theater, movement, and spokenword. They claim a public voice that reflects the forces in society that affect all our lives, and engage audiences in a dialogue about critical social and cultural issues.
The Performance Project is committed to the enrichment and empowerment of its membership who have been incarcerated, so that we may all know our value as individuals and as part of a larger community.
